What is AbleBloom ?

AbleBloom is a community-driven event, hosted by Project Ready and IntraSpectrum, dedicated to highlighting the remarkable talents of individuals with developmental disabilities. It serves as a platform for high school students, parents, and families of those with developmental disabilities to come together in support of disability awareness, community acceptance, and inclusivity. Held at the Scarsdale Public Library, AbleBloom is designed to engage all members of the community, with a particular focus on young children and teenagers.

Objectives:

The goals of our initiative are manifold and deeply impactful. We aim to educate children and community members about developmental disabilities, including Autism, Down's Syndrome, and other genetically predisposed conditions. By providing opportunities for personal interaction, we facilitate a deeper understanding and connection between individuals with developmental disabilities and the broader community.

Our efforts are dedicated to increasing disability awareness and acceptance, fostering a nurturing and supportive environment for individuals with developmental disabilities. We are committed to inspiring our community, especially young children and teenagers who might be less familiar with these conditions, to reflect on and actively contribute towards enhancing the lives of those in underserved communities.

Event activities

1.  Celebration of Creativity Through Artwork

    -The event will feature a vibrant display of artworks to celebrate the creativity of individuals with developmental disabilities. This will include:

    -Paintings that express emotions and perspectives uniquely.

    -Music performances, both solo and group, showcasing their musical talents.

    -Movement performances that highlight the expressive power of dance and physical expression.

    -Crafting works that demonstrate intricate skills and craftsmanship.

2.  Insights into the Lives of Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

    -Attendees will gain insights into the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families, emphasizing their journey towards independence, acceptance, and inclusiveness. 

This includes:

    -Community volunteer work undertaken by youth with disabilities, illustrating their contributions and engagement with the community.

    -Presentations on Autism in the workplace and pre-vocational training programs, showcasing efforts towards employment inclusion.

3.  Silent Auction for Artwork

    -A silent auction will be held for the artwork displayed during the event. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to local nonprofit organizations and advocacy groups dedicated to serving individuals with developmental disabilities, supporting their missions and work within the community.

4.  Educational Materials and Awareness

    -To further promote awareness, acceptance, and support for people with disabilities, educational materials will be available in both digital and print formats at the event. This includes:

    -The Kit for Kids: Educational resources designed to help children understand their peers with disabilities.

    -Autism Tuned In: Materials focused on providing insights into Autism for a broader audience.

    -IntraSpectrum Club pamphlet: Information about the club's initiatives and how to get involved.

    -Project Ready pamphlet: Details on Project Ready’s efforts and programs aimed at supporting individuals with developmental disabilities.
